Dental Crowns: Commonly Asked Questions
Dental Crowns, also known as Tooth Crowns or Tooth Caps, are a common Dental Treatment used by Dentists to help restore a tooth’s function and aesthetic. Many Dentists near you will place Dental Crowns, but there are often many questions when the procedure is recommended. Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to Dental Crowns.
What are Dental Crowns?
Dental Crowns are a treatment used by Dentists to help restore a tooth after significant damage or decay. A Crown helps to restore a tooth’s function and aesthetic and can be used for both restorative and cosmetic dentistry purposes. When maintained correctly, Dental Crowns can last for many years and are made of materials designed to mimic the strength of your original tooth structure.
What are Dental Crowns Made of?
Dental Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, each having their own pro’s and con’s. When recommending a Crown, your dentist will be able to walk you through the process of which material is best suited for your case.
The main types of Dental Crown materials include:

How are Dental Crowns Done?
Dental Crowns are typically done in two stages – a ‘Prep’ Appointment and an ‘Insert’ Appointment. The Prep Appointment involves the creation of a strong foundation for the new Crown to be seated and cemented. Depending on the case, the Dentist will create a custom foundation for the Crown and take an impression or scan of the newly shaped tooth to send to a laboratory.
The second appointment, or Insert appointment, will involve the cementation of the laboratory Crown and is typically scheduled two weeks after the Prep Appointment. Your Dentist will cement the Crown that was received from the lab and make sure all margins are correct. Final adjustments are made before sending you on your way with your new Dental Crown! Be sure to reach out to your Dentist your bite does not feel right over the next few days and they’ll be able to make adjustments to your bite.
Are Dental Crowns Covered by Insurance?
Dental Crowns are often covered in some fashion by Dental Insurances; however, they’re not always covered. As Crowns are considered to be a ‘major’ service, many plans will cover between 50%-80% of a Dental Crown and require a Pre-Determination to be sent in before starting treatment. This Major service coverage will often have a different percentage coverage than Basic treatment such as Cleanings and Fillings.
On the other hand, there are many cases when Dental Benefit coverages will not include Major coverage, so the patient will be left to cover the cost of the Crown on their own. It’s worth asking your Dentist if they offer Payment Plans or Financing opportunities to help spread the cost out over a few months and make the treatment more affordable.
